We are working diligently to help Haitians overcome alarming crises in the areas of food security, economic development, primary health care, emergency management, literacy, and certified technology education. HERO Work Past projects - Simeon Nerelus led the National Association for the Prevention of Starvation (NAPS) to build a $30,000 school in Haiti. (1998). - He directed NAPS’ international relief operations (Caribbean, Africa, Asia, South America) (1998 – 2006). HERO - Granted scholarships for promising elementary and college students in Haiti (2005– Present) - United and inspired the Huntsville/Madison, Alabama communities for support of HERO 2008 Haiti hurricane relief. This humanitarian mission fed and comforted 500 anguished children and families. (raised $10,000.00 toward that emergency relief). Current Projects HERO partnered with Starlingg Organization (www.starlingg.org) a hearing aid clinic located here in Huntsville. We just returned from a hearing aid mission where we tested and took ear impressions for 40 patients. We left 20 hearing aids for a Center for the deaf in Haiti. Just $200.00 will completely outfit a Haitian with a hearing aid kit (estimated cost $10,000.00). This trip has also laid the ground work for a technology wing in a local school that will begin technical training for young people (estimated cost $ 50,000.00). Intergraph Corporation, the leading global provider of engineering and geospatial software, has partnered with HERO and donated 100 pre-owned computers toward that goal. Future Projects Our goals include building and sustaining a Technology & Development Institute in Haiti for the education and certification of unemployed Haitians. Thereafter, develop and provide contracted call center based customer services for major technology companies, using certified Haitians. 10 yr goal - A“PHILANTHROPY UNIVERSITY”. Mission Statement:Goals HERO must reach to accomplish its mission The mission of HERO is to “make life better for Haiti ’s children.” HERO is working to alleviate the alarming crises confronting the children in the area of food security, economic development, primary health care, emergency management, relevant education.”
Haiti is the third hungriest nation in the world, behind Somalia and Afghanistan . Every hour many Haitian children are dying of starvation before reaching the age of 5. Education Only about 30% of Haitian children ever begin school, and of the 30%, only 2% stay in school beyond the 5th grade (www.webster.edu). There are about one million children and youth out of school because of poverty. Recently HERO paid full year tuition for 35 school-age children in order for them to afford school this year.
